Our Mission
Our workshop was founded in 2014 as a small family business with the goal of preserving the cultural heritage of the Mayan world.
We operate two small workshops, one at the Archaeological Site of Chichén Itzá and the other at the Archaeological Site of Tulum.
Our products, designed for visitors to archaeological sites, are crafted from bark paper (Amate) and printed with high-quality jet ink printers. Each item is accompanied by an explanatory document on how to interpret the Mayan calendar, astronomical calculations, and the Mayan Lunar Horoscope.
Amate paper is handmade, requiring 3 to 4 days to process a single sheet. We source our bark paper from a small community dedicated to cultivating Jenote or Amate trees (Ficus insipida).
The Mayan calendar uses a long count system to represent a single date. This requires the use of two calendars: the TZOLKIN (a secret calendar consisting of 20 days and 13 moons, totaling 260 days) and the HAAB (a daily calendar with 18 months of 20 days each, plus a month of 5 days, totaling 365 days). When these calendars complete a full rotation, they signify a period of 52 years, which the Mayans celebrate as the beginning of a new life cycle.
On many stelae, the first detail to be noted is the date as represented by the calendar. This is followed by the name of a significant individual (often a king) and finally, a carving or image of that person.
